BRAIN GYM^®

Overview

Brain Gym^® is a series of quick, fun and effective activities designed to enhance performance in all areas by assisting whole brain integration.

The Brain Gym^® movements were developed by Dr Paul Dennison who worked with specialists from many different fields. Brain Gym^® brings together work from researchers in physical movement, education, vision and Kinesiology. These movements can have a profound effect, developing the brain's neural pathways through movement, just as nature intended. Brain Gym movements are specifically used to help the development of underpinning skills for reading, writing, balance, coordination and other areas.

The Bi-lateral integration programme was developed by Sheila Dobie OBE, of the Institute for Neurophysiological Psychology, Scotland (INPP). This is an important programme used for the development of bi-lateral motor integration. This facilitates maturation of the central nervous system to help automatic function so fundamental to academic achievement.

Our Consultant, Alan Heath, has been an accredited Brain Gym^® Instructor since 1999 and has also trained extensively in movement based programmes relating to:

• Bi-lateral integration
• Primitive reflex integration
• Developmental movement
• The Learning Breakthrough Program^®

Many children with assessed conditions such as Dyspraxia, Developmental Coordination Disorder, ADHD and others have a large developmental component that can be assisted by the use of very specific types of movement.

Combined with The Learning Breakthrough Program^®, a perceptual motor programme developed by Dr Frank Belgau, Learning Solutions are able to offer an extensive range of movement therapies to suit the individual needs and developmental level of your child.

The development of these skills is vital to understand where our body is in relation to the external world. This is the foundation for learning the direction of letters, numbers and developing good coordination and balance.
